Job Overview

As an Engineer II (Big Data Engineer) at American Express, you’ll play a crucial role in building and maintaining backend services that integrate Salesforce with core enterprise data systems. You’ll work across real-time and batch data pipelines, enabling better decision-making for Sales and Marketing teams. You will also participate in the development of scalable microservices, data integrations, and analytics using modern tech stacks and big data platforms.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop scalable backend services and microservices
  • Work on data integration using Hadoop, Hive, Spark, and GCP
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and DevOps teams to deliver features
  • Perform code reviews and build POCs to establish best practices
  • Tune performance and optimize application latency
  • Participate in Agile development and cross-functional team collaboration
  • Contribute to continuous integration, deployment, and monitoring efforts
  • Stay up-to-date with tech trends and recommend enhancements


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or MCA
  • 4+ years of experience in: Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring MVC, Big Data tools: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, SQL, REST/SOAP/GraphQL APIs, Microservices architecture and distributed systems
  • 2+ years of experience in: Python, Scala, GCP Cloud, Tableau, Shell scripting, NiFi
  • Strong Agile methodology experience
  • Understanding of multithreading, JVM tuning, ORM (Hibernate/JPA)
  • Experience with messaging systems like Kafka, RabbitMQ
  • Familiarity with tools: Jenkins, GitHub Actions, XLR, Splunk, Dynatrace, ELF
  • Knowledge of cloud-native and asynchronous/reactive programming
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills


Preferred Skills:

  • Experience building cloud-native apps on Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience with MemSQL and Postgres SQL
  • Prior exposure to sales/marketing domains is a plus
